In August 2011, it was confirmed that Chelsea had fought off rivalry from the likes of Real Madrid to sign Lukaku from Anderlecht for a fee of £10,000,000, potentially rising to £17,000,000.
The 6ft 4ins Belgian came off the bench for his Chelsea debut against Norwich in late August during the 2011-12 season, and impressed with his powerful play and direct running, before another substitute appearance at Old Trafford and a first start in the Carling Cup against Fulham, where he played the full 120 minutes with extra-time despite lacking match fitness.
Chances in the first team were limited, with his only three starts coming in the Carling Cup before the Blues exit to Liverpool. His best spell in terms of minutes on the field came in January, when Drogba and Salomon Kalou were absent at the African Nations Cup, and he supported Fernando Torres from the bench. The young Belgian has had to be patient, however, using his frequent reserve appearances to send timely reminders to the manager, including his recent brace in a 4-2 win at Newcastle and two assists in a 2-2 draw at Swansea City.
On the final day of the season, Lukaku started for the first team against Blackburn Rovers and crossed for John Terry to open the scoring.
Lukaku was a member of the first team squad which travelled to America for a two-week pre-season tour ahead of the 2012-13 season where he netted a brace in the opening game, a 4-2 win against Seattle Sounders. However, in August 2012 the decision was made to send Lukaku on a season-long loan to West Bromwich Albion.
With the Belgian's spell at the Baggies proving successful, new manager Jose Mourinho convinced Lukaku to stay at Chelsea, promising him that he will get a chance. On 30 August 2013, Lukaku came on as a substitute in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup. The match had to be settled on penalties. Bayern Munich had 5 penalties scored with the Blues only having 4, Lukaku stepped up but missed the penalty, handing the Germans the Super Cup.
Due to the signing of Samuel Eto'o, and the club already having Fernando Torres and Demba Ba amongst the strikers, Lukaku was once again loaned out, to fellow Premier League side Everton for the 2013-14 season.
On 30 July 2014, Lukaku signed a permanent deal with Everton for a record fee of £28 million.
